Thursday, 20 October 2011 12:40
Microsoft's finally getting serious about making Windows Phone a legit mobile contender, and it's going to do it by making them way cheaper and easier to produce. Ballmer's boys are working with Qualcomm to get prices per phone under $200, less than half of the $400 they cost to build last year. More »

Student's CPU Patent Could Save Your Mobile Battery's Ass in the Future [Guts]
Friday, 04 March 2011 22:40
Sometimes your computer's CPU uses a lot of electricity—like when you're encoding an HD video, or playing a game. Sometimes it doesn't use much, like when you're writing a college essay on some dead guy or browsing Craigslist. Modern processors are able to down-shift when less power is needed—but it's slow. Faster throttling would mean less wasted power. More »

File Taxes From Your Smartphone with TurboTax SnapTax [Apps]
Wednesday, 02 March 2011 08:58
It's not for everyone: You have to have an income of 80k or less, have no dependents or real estate ownership, and get your income only from W-2s or unemployment. But if you meet those requirements (I do!), TurboTax SnapTax for Android and iOS has got to be the most painless way to deal with those inscrutable tax forms. Just use your smartphone to take a photo of your W-2, answer some (far less convoluted) questions supplied by the app, and then file them electronically. Getting that refund has never been easier. It might even feel like cheating. [iTunes, Android Market via TurboTax] More »
